Top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on unseeded Clara Burel in the Cleveland quarter-finals. This will mark their first career meeting and the winner will play Katerina Siniakova or Peyton Stearns for a place in the final. Here’s a look at the match preview and our prediction. 

Maia is having a strong debut in this WTA 250 event and has won both her matches in straight sets. She will be hoping to maintain this form and build up momentum for the upcoming US Open. The Brazilian, who has lacked consistency throughout the year, defeated Cristina Bucsa by the loss of three games in the last round. 

Her 11th win on hard courts improved her record to 22-21. The world number 23 has made one semi-final appearance so far this year – in Abu Dhabi. 

Clara Burel hasn’t gone past the quarter-finals this year at tour level and in the challenger circuit. The Frenchwoman is enjoying her return to this event after losing in the first round on her debut last year. 

Her two wins here were achieved without losing a set. She defeated lucky loser Elvina Kalieva in the first round and then saw off eighth seed Sofia Kenin to advance to the quarters. The 23-year-old had managed just two wins in eight outings before she arrived in Cleveland. 

This year she has largely struggled and has lost 20 matches, which is two more defeats than the wins she has managed. Burel’s run in Cleveland has moved her two places up in the live ranking, to 56th position.
