The PBA Governors’ Cup sees Northport battling for a playoff spot when it takes on TNT Tropang Giga at the PhilSports Arena on Wednesday. Northport is currently sitting just outside the postseason cutoff line in ninth-place with a record of three wins and seven defeats. Despite the team’s struggles this season, a win in the final game of the regular season would see Northport move into the top eight and qualify for the quarter final of the playoffs. Northport has recovered from an ugly six game losing streak to start the year to put itself within a shout of making the postseason thanks to a run of three wins in its last four games. It’s last outing ended with Northport recording a 113-97 win over Rain or Shine with a huge 39 point, 13 rebound performance from import player Kevin Murphy leading the way. 

Standing in Northport’s way is a powerhouse TNT side who are sitting top of the Governors’ Cup standings with eight wins and only one loss. They are guaranteed a top four finish, which brings with it a “twice-to-beat” advantage in the playoff quarter final, even if TNT loses its remaining two games. They will, of course, be gunning for the top spot however and a win here would wrap up a top two finish for the 2021 Philippine Cup champions. TNT competed in the East Asian Super League at the beginning of the month and should be well-rested for this matchup with their last game coming on the 3rd of March. TNT’s last PBA Governors’ cup game ended in a slim 105-103 win over the Beermen, the sixth consecutive victory for the league leaders.
