Seventh seed Barbora Krejcikova will begin her Zhengzhou Open campaign on Thursday by playing unseeded Petra Martic in the second round. The winner will set up a quarterfinal showdown with either tenth seed Donna Vekic or the qualifier Lesia Tsurenko. Barbora Krejcikova was defeated in the first round in Beijing in her last match. This was a disappointing return to the tour after her San Diego triumph just two weeks prior. She will hope to not suffer the same fate in what is her debut here. The current world number 18 has won two titles this year and has finished as runner-up once. She has compiled a 29-17 record and has won 19 of 29 matches on hard courts.

Petra Martic defeated Krejcikova on clay in Madrid earlier this year. This was their first-ever meeting and she will hope for a similar outcome. Martic has struggled to get going on hard courts and has lost more than she has won on the surface. The Croat, who has won 24 matches this year, has compiled an 8-12 record on hard courts. Martic did however make a winning start to her second appearance in Zhengzhou and defeated Magda Linette in straight sets. The 32-year-old rose all the way to the final the last time she was here which was during her debut in 2019. Martic is up four places to 41st in the live ranking.
