World number 12, Barbora Krejcikova, will play her compatriot 57th-ranked Linda Fruhvirtova, in the quarter-final of the 2023 Birmingham Open on Friday. The winner of this match will face either Lin Zhu or Rebecca Marino in the penultimate match of the competition. While Krejcikova is widely considered to be a clay-court specialist, it is worth remembering that she did win the doubles tournament at Wimbledon last year. Seeded number one here in Birmingham, the Czech has justified her standing here as she made light work of qualifiers Cristina Bucsa and Tereza Martincova in the opening rounds in straight sets and looks in a great rhythm. With those wins, she has improved her record this season to 22-11. Having beaten this opponent once before, she will be firmly expecting another victory in this one. 

Fruhvirtova has a very promising career ahead of her, and still, at only 18 years of age, she will be making her first main draw appearance at Wimbledon in under two weeks. This is her first grass-court tournament of the year, and she looked very impressive against Elina Svitolna in her opening match, beating the Ukrainian in straight sets while only losing two games. She was made to work a bit harder in round two against the sixth-seed and 27th-ranked Bernarda Pera but once again showed class beyond her years as she overcame the American in straight sets. Fruhvirtova is now 11-12 for the year but seems to be improving with every match she plays. She goes into this match as the underdog but will relish the opportunity to gain as much court time as she can before the Grand Slam event next month.
