Australia will play Spain in in a Saturday Group A men’s Basketball clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Here’s our preview and a prediction of the third match between the two countries at the global games.

Despite their basketball profile, Australia are still in search of their first Olympic gold. They have made the semi-finals five times including in the last two editions. The Boomers claimed the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 Tokyo, and will aim for the final this time.

Brian Goorjian’s men qualified for their 13th successive Olympic games as the number-one-ranked Oceania nation on the FIBA World Cup rankings. Australia, who finished 10th in last year’s World Cup, have been in fine form building up to the Olympics.

They have won eight of their last 10 matches and are on a three-match winning run. The team, with eight NBA players in its roster, has qualified for the knockout rounds in the last four tournaments.

Spain had a disappointing Olympics outing in Tokyo and will be determined to restore their pride. La Roja were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual champions USA, ending a run of three successive podium finishes.

The three-time silver medalists have a strong record against Australia which should have them confident of victory here. They have won seven straight matches in this fixture with two coming in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

Sergio Scariolo’s men arrive for this match in red-hot form as they have won their last seven games. They defeated Puerto Rico 107-84 in their last build-up fixture. Spain, whose squad is built up to a large scale by players playing locally, made it to this year’s tournament via qualifying.
