Australia vs South Africa Prediction & Betting Tips - ICC Champions Trophy
by Ian John | in ICC Champions Trophy Predictions
Today’s ICC Champions Trophy match prediction features one of the stand-out ties of the Group Stage of this famous tournament. Australia and South Africa clash in a game where the winner will almost certainly confirm themselves a place in the semi-finals. Will the Baggy Greens or Proteas come out on top?
The teams find themselves in the pole positions in Group B following victories in their opening game of the tournament. This will also be the 111th One Day game between Australia and South Africa, with South Africa holding the advantage with 55 wins compared to 51 for Australia (three draws, one no-result).
Australia defeated South Africa in the Cricket World Cup semi-finals two years ago, but South Africa has won four of the last five ODI games between the two teams. With a semi-final spot in the tournament likely confirmed for the winner, there is plenty at stake in Tuesday morning’s match in Rawalpindi.

Australia - South Africa: Form Analysis
Currently, both teams will start this game having landed a win in their opening game in the Champions Trophy. South Africa top the table by Net Run Rate after their comfortable win over Afghanistan. Put into bat, South Africa scored 315 in their 50 overs, losing just six wickets before skittling out Afghanistan for 208 in reply.
It was the fourth win in their last five One Day International games for the Proteas. It continued their good form in the One Day format of the game, which is a parallel to their excellent form in test match cricket.
Australia’s mammoth batting performance saw them overcome England's toothless bowling attack in their record-breaking opening match.
Set 352 to win, Australia produced a superb performance with the bat.
The star man was wicketkeeper Josh Inglis. His 120 not out was the cornerstone of a successful run chase. It led to a win by five wickets with 15 balls remaining against their fierce rivals.
It was a welcome win for the Aussies who had lost their last four ODI games heading into this tournament (two against Pakistan and then two on a tour of Sri Lanka).

Australia & South Africa Squad Analysis
With both teams having started the competition with excellent wins, it is hard to see there being changes for this crucial second match. As such, you can expect both South Africa and Australia to take to the field with their strongest possible lineups in Rawalpindi.
Australia’s man-of-the-match against England Josh Inglis will hope he won’t have to anchor the team as he did against the Three Lions.
Both Travis Head and Steve Smith gave their wickets away cheaply v England.
Now, both key batsmen will be seeking to play themselves into form in this game.
In addition to Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey both made important contributions in that win and both will likely be keen to at least match, if not better their performance against England against their next opponents.
For South Africa, man-of-the-match against Afghanistan, opener Ryan Rickelton will be one of the key players again for the Proteas. The middle order of Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram all contributed 50+ against Afghanistan and showcase the quality of batting in the South African team.
However, two absentees from that game could come into contention, Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs.
Klaasen’s participation seems dependent on his recovery from an elbow injury.
However the Proteas may not want to risk him this early in the tournament.

Our Australia vs South Africa Prediction
Our prediction for the Australia vs. South Africa ICC Champions Trophy Group Stage match is: South Africa wins the match.
Strangely, considering how evenly matches these two teams are, the majority of the data for this match seems to point to a South Africa win. However, in the last big ODI between the two teams, Australia defeated the Proteas in the 2023 World Cup semi-final. That is why the bookies make them favorites here. But the data suggests South Africa hold the advantage, so in our view, backing the underdogs here is the value bet.
Australia vs South Africa - Other Interesting Predictions
Top Away Team Bowler - Kagiso Rabada (South Africa)
If South Africa are to win this match, then their bowling attack is going to have to be super-sharp against a deep Australian batting line-up. Kagiso Rabada is going to have to play a key role for the Proteas in this case. He has a decent history against the Aussies, once taking 11 wickets in a test match against the Baggy Greens back in 2023.
His ODI stats against Australia are more modest, but he is overdue for a big performance against the Aussies in the white ball game.
