Australia - Afghanistan Squad Analysis
Another solid innings from Travis Head against Bangladesh sees him move up to third in the leading run-scorer standings. The Aussie opener is now on 179 runs in five innings and trailing Nicholas Pooran by 11.
David Warner’s half-century against the Tigers moved him up to third on the same list, while Marcus Stoinis is now seventh, having only had three innings in the competition so far.
Regardless of whether Afghanistan makes it to the next round or not, the major positive they will look back on in this tournament is the performance of Fazalhaq Farooqi.
The speedster has been the leading wicket-taker in the competition since week two and has now taken 15 wickets in just 18.2 overs since the start of the T20 World Cup. He is four wickets clear of Australia’s Adam Zampa.
Australia - Afghanistan Form Analysis
Australia have been excellent at the T20 World Cup this year. They are one of only two sides, along with South Africa, that have played and won all five matches in the competition to date.
The Aussies' first match of this round saw them overcome Bangladesh by eight wickets via the DLS method. They were on 100/2 when rain interrupted play on Friday morning, 27 runs ahead of where they needed to be.
That result followed wins over associate nations Namibia, Scotland and Oman, as well as defending champions England during the group stage. Australia have now won seven of their last eight T20 internationals in all competitions.
Afghanistan have only faced Australia once in the past in the shortest format and it ended in a lopsided defeat for the Blue Tigers.
The Afghans finished second in the group stages behind the West Indies, with six points and a net run rate of +1.835.
In the loss to India, the Blue Tigers came up 47 runs shy of the 181 target, with only Azmatullah Omarzai managing to score more than 20 runs for the side.
It’s a do-or-die situation for Afghanistan now, as a defeat here could spell the end of their T20 World Cup campaign.
