World number 48, Aslan Karatsev, will face off against the eighth-ranked Taylor Fritz in round two of the ATP Stuttgart Open. The winner of this match will take on either Nick Kyrgios or Denis Shapovalov in round three. Karatsev comes into this tournament with solid form behind him. The Russian qualified for Roland Garros with little trouble, winning each of his three qualifiers in straight sets. He followed up with an excellent performance against Alexei Popyrin in the first round but came up short against Frances Tiafoe after winning the first set. Ahead of the Grand Slam event, Karatsev reached his first Masters event semi-final of the year in Madrid, which almost halved his world ranking as he head to France. He is now 20-10 for the year and picked up his first grasscourt win of the year against Corentin Moutet in the previous round after a titanic three-set battle that went down to the wire. Can he claim another big scalp in this one? 

Meanwhile, the number two seed, Taylor Fritz, will be making his first appearance on the grass this year after receiving a buy in the opening round. Following an unexpected defeat to Francisco Cerundolo in round three at Roland Garros, the American’s record is now 31-12 for the year. Fritz has been consistent this year and has only bowed out in his first match once this year, which came in Rome at the start of last month. He’s already made five semi-final appearances this year and has won the two finals he participated in at Delray Beach and the United Cup back at the start of the year. His clay court form has been below his usual stands, but now back on one of his favoured surfaces, the American will be eyeing up another solid run here in Germany in preparation for Wimbledon in a couple of weeks.
