Aslan Karatsev has slipped down to 37th in the world rankings. He takes on Daniel Elahi Galan in the second round of the Hamburg Open. Karatsev was as high as 14th earlier this year but then tumbled down to 43rd. His year began well when winning the Sydney Tennis Classic and getting to the last 32 of the Australian Open. His form slumped though with 15 out of 18 matches lost. He showed signs of a return to form by reaching the last eight in the Swedish Open last week. That's continued in Hamburg as he defeated the sixth seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round and only lost four games.

His opponent was ranked 113th in the latest list. He's up to 99 in the live rankings and could be up to 91st if winning this match. Galan had to win two qualifiers to reach the main draw and one of those went to a final set. He had a good win in the first round with a straight sets victory over Federico Coria. 2022 began with him in 120th place in the rankings and was as high as 103rd in March but 128th the following month. He's won two Challenger Tour events  on clay  this year but has had some terrible results too. 10 times this year he's lost to a player ranked outside the top 100, including two in the 190s and five lower than 200th. Back Karatsev to continue his return to form with a win.
