Ashlyn Krueger and Anhelina Kalinina, both unseeded, will face off in the first round of the WTA Tokyo open. Coming into this match Krueger had an easy passage, getting a walkover against Misaki Doi in the qualifiers. She thus plays her first match after winning the Osaka Open, beating Lin Zhu in the final. The American is on her best ranking, at number 73 in the world and hopes to prolong her recent good run. Coming into this match she has five straight wins and a walkover. The 19-year-old will be gunning for her third title in 2023 after Osaka and Veneto Open wins. This season, she has compiled a 40-23 win-loss record, with a majority of her wins coming on hard court. She has 23 wins and 13 losses in matches played on hard courts so far. The win in Osaka made up for early exits in Washington, Montreal, Stanford and US Open.

Kalinina arrives here from an unsuccessful outing at the Guadalajara Open, where she exited in the second round. A 6-2, 7-6 loss to Sofia Kenin ended her participation in Mexico and she will hope for a longer stay here. She has six losses in her last 10 matches and though higher ranked, she enters this game as the underdog. Ranked 28th in the world, Kalinina’s recent results just about paints a picture of her season. She arrives for this game having compiled a 22-23 record and hasn’t won a title. The Ukrainian however came close on clay in Rome, only retiring in the final with injury in May. She hasn’t lasted more than two matches in the 12 tournaments after Rome, and will be desperate for a better performance in Tokyo. However, in four of the last five tournaments, Kalinina has won her first round matches.
