World number one Ashleigh Barty remains on course to win her first Australian Open. Barty has at least achieved her best performance in her home Grand Slam beating the quarter final she made in 2019. She followed that up by winning the French Open and ended the year the top ranked famale player in the world. Barty won the Adelaide International earlier this month but then had a few problems in her opening match in this tournament. The Australian lost the opening set to Lesia Tsurenko but fought back to take the next two. The only other set she has dropped in this tournament was in her fourth round victory over 18th seed Allison Riske. The quarter final saw her defeat Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

Sofia Kenin had never made it to a Grand Slam quarter final before this event. The 14th seed won three titles last year as she climbed the rankings. and victory here is likely to see her in the top ten next week. Kenin has only dropped one set on her way to the semi-finals. That was when taking on Coco Gauff in the fourth round. Her quarter final saw her up against another unseeded player as she beat Ons Jabeur 6-4 6-4. These two players have met five times in the past two years with Barty 4-1 up. Another win for the Australian looks on the cards here and she can win in straight sets.
