There had been the possibility that Ashleigh Barty might lose her world number one ranking this weekend. The exit of Naomi Osaka has ended that threat and now Barty takes on Elina Svitolina for a place in the final of the Miami Open. Barty is the number one seed and defending champion in this tournament. This is the first overseas event she has entered this year and it's not been the easiest of tournaments for her. Three of her matches have gone to a final set, though Barty is yet to go a set down. Those three-setters were against Kristina Kucova, Victoria Azarenka and in the quarter finals, Aryna Sabalenka.

Elina Svitolina is the number five seed and hasn't had the greatest of years to date. There have been a few losses to players ranked below her and a string of quarter finals. At least that run has ended after she defeated Anastastija Sevastova in straight sets in her quarter final. Two of her matches in this event have gone to three sets. Those were against Shelby Rogers and Petra Kvitova. On both occasions, Svitolina had to come from behind to get the win. Dropping the first set in this match would make it extremely difficult for her to get back into the match. With the pressure over her rankings gone, Barty can get the win here.
