Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed in Wuhan, will battle the unseeded Magdalena Frech in the quarter-finals. This will be their first meeting and the winner will take on Cori Gauff or Magda Linette for a place in the championship match. Let’s look at the stats and a prediction for this match.

Aryna Sabalenka has progressed to her 11th successive quarter-final. Since 2009, only one other player has made it to more successive last-eight appearances. The Belarussian had to sweat to advance to this round.

Battling against the unseeded Yulia Putintseva, Sabalenka mounted a comeback after losing the first set. The world number two has been in a rich vein of form, winning 17 of her last 18 matches.

In total, she has claimed 51 wins and recorded three title victories with two being Grand Slam wins. Sabalenka currently tops the WTA Singles Race and is assured of a spot in the year-end WTA Finals.

Magdalena Frech is also having an exciting year which has peaked well during the second half of the season. The Pole has registered 41 wins which is the first time since 2017 that she has won at least 40 matches in a season.

Frech, who has won 12 of her last 15 matches, claimed her first tour title when she took part in Guadalajara last month. She also had a runner-up finish in Prague.

To get to the last eight here, the 26-year-old powered her way past Beatriz Haddad Maia to win in straight sets. Frech’s form has greatly impacted her world ranking and she is now in a new career-high WTA placing.

She has moved up three places in the live ranking on account of her win over Maia and is now in 24th place.
