Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed in Wuhan, will take on fourth seed Cori Gauff in a tantalizing semi-final tie on Saturday. This is their eighth career meeting and the winner will play Wang Xinyu, Qinwen Zheng or Jasmine Paolini in the final. Read on for our prediction of this match.

This will be Sabalenka’s eighth semi-final appearance this season and progressed to six finals. To progress to the last four, the world number two overcame the challenge of Magdalena Frech in straight sets.

The 26-year-old has won 18 times in her last 19 outings. She has claimed 52 wins in total and is on course to set a new record for most wins achieved in a season.

Sabalenka has won three times against Gauff, twice on hard courts. One of those wins came earlier this year on her way to winning the Australian Open.

Cori Gauff is enjoying her best form of 2024, winning her last nine matches, all on hard courts. This run started in Beijing where she won the second WTA 1000 title of her career.

The American is coming off a dominant 6-0, 6-4 victory over Magda Linette for her 50th win of the season. Though she has been in spectacular form, Gauff has found the semi-final stage extremely difficult.

She has suffered most of her defeats this season (five) in the semi-finals stage. One was against Sabalenka in Melbourne back in January. As she is in a rich vein of form, she will be confident of victory here.

Gauff, who has moved up to third in the live ranking, has won four times against Sabalenka. Three of her wins came on hard courts, her latest securing the US Open title last season.
