Eighth seed Ben Shelton will continue with his Japan Open title defence against unseeded Arthur Fils. They will battle in the quarter-finals on Sunday. Below are stats leading up to this match for and a our prediction.

Fils had luck on his side as he progressed to this round after Matteo Berrettini retired injured in their second-round duel. The Italian had taken the first set via a tiebreaker but could not continue in the second set, allowing Fils to advance.

Fils has now won three matches in a row, the first time he has done so since winning in Hamburg. The young Frenchman has compiled a 33-23 record and has played in two tour semi-finals.

He has, however, also lost four times in the quarter-finals at tour level. Advancing to this round moved him one place to 23rd in the live ranking.

Ben Shelton triumphed here last year to register the first tour success of his career. He is back now as a two-time tour champion and will be eager to replicate his success from 12 months ago.

The American, who is also on a three-match winning run, defeated Mariano Navone in straight sets. That was his 35th victory in 56 outings this season. Champion on home soil in Houston, Shelton has played in four tour semis this season, two of which have been on hard courts.

Currently up to 15th in the live ranking, Shelton has defeated Fils before. He won their only encounter last year in straight sets at the Laver Cup. The winner here will play Jordan Thompson, Kei Nishikori, Yoshihito Nishioka or Holger Rune next.
