Fourth seed Alexander Zverev is through to another Hamburg European Open semifinal and will on Saturday face unseeded Arthur Fils. Arthur Fils is chasing his second tour title of the season and third title of the year. The young Frenchman is having quite the year as he has won his first challenger and tour titles this season. He began by winning the Oeiras Challenger in January before surprising many by triumphing in Lyon for his maiden tour crown. This success has strengthened his confidence going into tournaments. He has compiled an impressive 31-13 win-loss record and in Hamburg is yet to drop a set. In his last match, he dominated Casper Ruud, dropping just four games against the top seed. As a result, he has moved into the top 50 for the first time and is currently ranked 47th in the live ranking.

Alexander Zverev has also won his three matches here without dropping a set. To advance to this round, he outdueled Luca Van Assche, dropping seven games in the process. His 30th win of the season has allowed him to advance to the semifinals here for the third time. He has never gone past this round though but he will hope to do so now in what is his sixth appearance. Zverev is a strong performer on clay and it is no surprise that he is excelling on the surface in his injury-troubled season. He has won 18 of the 25 matches he has played on clay. This has played a big part in his return back to the ATP top 20. The German is currently ranked 19th in the world. The winner of this tie will play either Laslo Djere or Zhang Zhizhen, both unseeded, in the final.
