Sixth seed Arthur Fils has to beat qualifier Alejandro Tabilo to reach the ASB Classic final. Awaiting the winner in the final of this hard court tournament are either top seed Ben Shelton or unseeded Taro Daniel. Fils was ranked 35th at the start of this tournament but is up a place after reaching this semi-final. The French player has made a good start to the new year. Last week saw him reach the last eight in Hong Kong where he was beaten by Andrey Rublev. Last month saw him get to the final of the Next Generation tournament and before that was the runner-up in the European Open in October. In Auckland, Fils knocked out defending champion Richard Gasquet in the first round without dropping a set. Since then he's won two more matches in straight sets though quarter final opponent Daniel Altmaier retired after losing the first set.

Alejandro Tabilo didn't have to go on court to win his quarter final. Scheduled opponent Cameron Norrie withdrew due to a wrist injury. Tabilo was down in 82nd place in the rankings when arriving in Auckland. He's up to 67th now and beating Fils will see him beat his career high of 64th. The Chilean had to win two qualifying matches to get into the main draw and did so without dropping a set. In the main draw, he struggled in round one losing the first set to Borna Gojo with only one game won. He recovered well to win the two remaining sets losing only three games. His other win came saw him beat Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets. We go fo Fils to win this in straight sets.
