Argentina and Australia will battle for top spot in Pool B in the 2024 Olympics Rugby Sevens competition on Thursday. Both teams are on six points and are through to the knockout round, with Los Pumas currently ahead of the Wallabies on points difference. Let’s get into the match prediction.
The world’s number-one ranked side have made a perfect start in their quest to win the gold medal, posting back-to-back wins over Kenya (31-12) and Samoa (28-12), in their first two matches of the competition.
The HSBC SVNS Series champions were guilty of some ill-discipline during the early exchanges against the Kenyans but did well to rectify leading up to the break and dominated the second period. In match two, they controlled the game for large periods, doubling the number of tries Samoa managed by the final whistle.
Los Pumas have won five of the last six matches between these sides, including a 14-5 victory last month at the Spain SVNS tournament.
Australia also booked their place in the knockout round by managing consecutive victories in their first two matches. However, the Samoans did put up a solid performance and lost by just seven points with the final scoreline reading 21-14.
The Wallabies' second match against Kenya was far more straightforward, with the men from Down Under showing confident play and breaking through their opponents' defence out wide with regularity.
Given Los Pumas' solid defensive unit, wing play could be crucial for the Wallabies again in this match.
