World number 58 Arantxa Rus will play wildcard Paula Badosa to begin her 2024 Bad Homburg campaign. The two will square off in the first round with the winner playing Maria Sakkari or Elisabetta Cocciaretto next.

Arantxa Rus is having a disappointing season. She has lost 20 of the 34 matches she has played and has yet to win more than two fixtures at a tour event. The Dutch player has also continued with her struggles on grass.

Rus isn’t a strong grasscourt player and has lost more than she has won on the surface in her career. This year, she has managed just one win in four grasscourt outings. Before arriving for her second appearance in Bad Homburg, the 33-year-old had suffered a first-round exit in Berlin as a lucky loser. Rus is currently ranked 55th in the live ranking.

Paula Badosa is making her season debut on grass. This is also her first appearance at this WTA 500 event. The Spaniard has a better record on grass than Rus and also has the upper hand in this fixture.

Having defeated Rus in both of their encounters, she will be confident of making a winning start here. Badosa has seen an improvement in her form in recent outings after a slow start to the year.

The three-time tour champion, who has compiled an 11-11 record, has registered five of her wins in her last seven fixtures. Badosa was last on the court three weeks ago as she produced a third-round finish at Roland Garros.

The former world number two is currently ranked 113th in the live ranking. A strong run in this event will set her up nicely going into Wimbledon. Badosa has qualified for the second week of competition twice in her last three appearances at SW19.
