World number 57 Arantxa Rus and qualifier Katie Volynets will meet on Monday at the Charleston Open. They will square off in the first round with the winner taking on Emma Navarro for a place in the third round. Arantxa Rus is having a topsy-turvy campaign and arrived in this WTA 500 event with a losing record. She has lost nine of 16 matches and has won once in her last seven outings. Currently ranked 53rd in the live ranking, Rus will hope to turn things around as the season switches to her favoured surface. Rus, who is making her debut in Charleston, is a dominant clay court player. She has won over 400 matches on the surface in her career. Rus’ last three tour and challenger titles have been achieved on clay. The 33-year-old was last on the court in Miami where she lost in the second round.

Katie Volynets is having a far better campaign than Rus. Though not a dominant clay court performer, she will hope to have enough momentum to win here. Volynets fancies hard courts more and this is where most of her success this season has been achieved. She has compiled a 19-7 record and 17 of her wins have come on hard courts. The American has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits and her two best finishes have been in the latter. Volynets, who is in her second appearance in Charleston, was a finalist in Mumbai and Canberra. She has started her clay campaign splendidly by winning both of her qualifiers here. She defeated compatriot Ann Li last time out and had to come from a set down to win in three. Volynets, who has compiled a 48-32 record on clay in her career, defeated Rus in their only encounter two seasons ago at Indian Wells. Advancing to the main draw has moved her closer to returning to the top 100. She is up 12 places to 109th in the live ranking.
