World number 238 Angelique Kerber is back at the French Open and will play world number 49 Arantxa Rus in the first round. The winner will then play fourth seed Elena Rybakina or unseeded Greet Minnen in the second round. Arantxa Rus has won a main draw match at Roland Garros since her run to the fourth round in 2012. She has appeared nine times in this event since then, six in the main draw. The 33-year-old will need to dig deep if she is to end this long wait for a win here as she has struggled this year. Angelique Kerber is back at Roland Garros after a year hiatus. The German is a two-time quarter-finalist in this major and missed last year’s edition while on maternity leave. She sat out the entire year which led to her plummeting in the world rankings. The former world number one, who is playing here with a protected ranking, ranked 657th at the start of the year. She has gradually improved in the right direction and is currently placed 232nd in the live ranking. Kerber made the third round the last time she played here and ended a run of three successive first-round eliminations. The 36-year-old three-time Grand Slam champion has registered six of her seven wins in her last 10 fixtures. She is coming off a run to the fourth round in Rome where she was eliminated by eventual champion Iga Swiatek.
