World number 88 Andy Murray takes on Taro Daniel in the first round at Indian Wells. The winner of this match takes on 31st seed Alexander Bublik in the second round. Murray is facing Daniel for the third time this year. The pair first met in the Australian Open with the Japanese player winning in three straight sets. Murray got some revenge when beating Daniel in Doha for the loss of just four games making it two wins out of three against the Japanese player. The Scottish player has moved up 46 places in the world rankings this year and is back in the top 100 for the first time since 2018. He's had an up and down year with a best performance of reaching the final in Sydney. Murray has had a break since mid-February when losing to Roberto Bautista Agut, winning just one game. 

Taro Daniel is ranked 106th in the world, 19 places higher than at the start of this year. He reached the last 16 in Adelaide and then the third round of the Australian Open. Daniel failed to build on that win over Murray and lost to Jannik Sinner in his next match. Since that Grand Slam, he has reached the last 16 in Dubai but lost an ITF match against Elias Ymer, who was ranked 133rd that week.
