Andy Murray begins what looks like being his last ever tournament at Indian Wells. He takes on fellow unseeded player David Goffin with the winner taking on fifth seed Andrey Rublev in round two. This is a Masters 1000 tournament played on an outdoor hard court. There are plenty of ranking points available and both these players could do with earning some. Murray is currently 61st in the rankings and has one key aim at present. He's winding down his career and wants to play in the Paris Olympics. To do so he needs to be ranked in the top 56. It's not been a good year so far for Murray with only two of his eight matches being won. His first four matches of 2024 were all lost but then came wins in Doha and Dubai. He'll want to continue his impressive record against Goffin. Murray has won all seven of their previous matches but they've only played each other once in the last six years. Not one set has been dropped by Murray in their previous meetings.

David Goffin was ranked as high as seventh in 2017 but was only 112th when the latest rankings list was published. The Belgian had to qualify to get into this main draw and sruggled to do so. He dropped a set in both of his qualifiers and had to come from behind to get past Maxime Cressy in his first match. Goffin has reached a quarter final this year but it was on the lesser Challenger Tour. His best run on the ATP Tour has been geting to the last 16 in Rotterdam but most of his wins this year have come in qualifiers. We back Murray to get the win here.
