Andy Murray missed out on being seeded at the US Open but will have been happy with his draw. The Scottish player takes on Corentin Moutet with the winner taking on either 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov or unseeded Alex Molcan. Murray could easily have drawn one of the top seeds in the first round but that can wait until round two. This tournament begins with Murray in 37th place in the rankings and might have made it into the top 32 but for a recent injury. The 36-year-old won this title 11 years ago but hasn't got past round three since a quarter final in 2016. He hasn't made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam since a quarter final at Wimbledon in 2017. He has won two Challenger Tour events this year (both on grass) but the highlight was being runner-up in the Doha hard court tournament in February.

Corentin Moutet is the world number 72 but the French player has not had a good 2023. That's illustrated by the fact he's down at 155 in the ATP Live Race, which is 118 places behind Murray. Moutet has only once made it past the third round in a Grand Slam and that was in New York last year. He lost to eventual runner-up Casper Ruud in the fourth round of the 2022 US Ope and beat 22nd seeded Botic Van de Zandschlup in round two. Six of the last seven Grand Slam event he's played have seen him exit in round two, including all three this year. He's played four hard court tournaments in recent weeks and didn't win a main draw match in any of them. His only recent wins came in the qualifying rounds in Cincinnati and Toronto. Only four of his nine hard court matches played this year have been won and he's lost his last three main draw matches. We expect Andy Murray to win this match.
