Second seed Jannik Sinner and third seed Andrey Rublev will on Saturday face each other in the semifinals at the Vienna Open. The winner will then battle either Daniil Medvedev or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. Andrey Rublev will seek to tie this series with Sinner in what is their sixth career meeting. One of his two victories against his soon-to-be opponent came in his title run in this very same tournament in 2020. There was a bit of luck then as Sinner was forced to retire in the first set. Rublev is again having a strong campaign and is one win away from tying his career win tally for a season. He has now claimed 53 victories after defeating fifth seed Alexander Zverev in three sets in the quarterfinals. The world number five has already secured his place in next month’s ATP Finals in Turin. He has however stuttered on indoor hard courts and has won three of his five fixtures on the surface.

Jannik Sinner has won three of the previous five meetings with Rublev. He will feel that it could be more as both his defeats have been enforced by injury. The Italian was also forced to retire as the two battled in the fourth round at Roland Garros last season. Sinner defeated Rublev earlier this season in Miami to take the lead in this series. The 22-year-old is having his best ever season at tour level which has allowed him to cement his position in the ATP’s top 10. The current world number four has compiled an impressive 54-14 record. He has won three titles and has finished as runner-up a further two times. Just like Rublev, Sinner has also qualified for the year-end ATP Finals. Sinner defeated seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in the quarterfinals.
