Fifth seeded Andrey Rublev battles the ninth seed Holger Rune in the last 16 of the Australian Open. The winner of this match will face either Novak Djokovic or Alex de Minaur in the quarter finals. If Rublev can win this match he'll be reaching only his second Australian Open quarter final. It would be his seventh Grand Slam quarter final but he's yet to win one. The Russian began this Australian Open ranked sixth in the world but is up a place in the live rankings. There's a big gap to Stefanos Tsitsipas in fourth but if Rublev could win this tournament, he can climb to a career high second place. His 2023 didn't get off to a good start with no wins in either of the Adelaide International tournaments. He's gone much better this week with wins over Dominic Thiem (only losing nine games), a four set victory over Emil Ruusuvouri and then in the third round, a straight sets win over Daniel Evans, again only losing nine games.

Holger Rune is the world number ten and had a fantastic 2022. He began last year ranked just outside the top 100 but steadily climbed the ranking list and won three ATP Tour tournaments and reached two other finals. His biggest win was in the Paris Masters, where he beat Novak Djokovic in the final. Rune is up to ninth in the live rankings and this is his best performance in the Australian Open. That didn't take too much effort to achieve as his only previous appearance in Melbourne was last year when he lost in the first round. A win over Rublev will take him into his second Grand Slam quarter final. This year has seen Rune play one warm-up tournament and lost in his first match to Yoshihito Nishioka who has also made it to the last 16 of this tournament. Rune has so far had wins over Flilip Krajinovic, Maxime Cressy and Ugo Humbert without dropping a set. He's had one previous match against Rublev, beating him in straight sets on his way to that Paris Masters title. He's in good form and can get another win over the Russian.
