Wednesday will serve an all-Russian second round battle at Wimbledon when seventh seed Andrey Rublev meets unseeded Aslan Karatsev. A third-round clash with either wildcard David Goffin or qualifier Tomas Barrios awaits the winner. Rublev defeated unseeded Max Purcell in straight sets to advance to this round. In so doing, he secured his 32nd win of the season in 45 matches played. Five of his victories have come on grass and this has taken his career win-loss record on the surface to 22-12. The last time the current world number seven played at the All England Club, he managed a fourth-round finish. This was in 2021 and it was his best result here. Last season, alongside other Russian players, he was banned from the competition due to the war in Ukraine.

Aslan Karatsev defeated Rublev in Dubai two seasons ago in their first and only encounter to date. He will hope for the same outcome as he hopes to continue with his winning start here. Karatsev won his first ever main draw match at Wimbledon in beating Luca Van Assche 3-1 in the first round. He was forced to come from a set down to win, with the match lasting three hours and 21 minutes. This was his 22nd win of the campaign and third on grass. It moved him up two places to 48th in the live ranking. This season, Karatsev is faring much better than he has ever done before on grass. He has never won multiple matches on the surface in a season and has now taken his overall tally to 6-12.
