Andy Murray takes on qualifier Andrea Vavassori in the first round of the Madrid Masters. A tough task lies ahead for the winner with second seeded Daniil Medvedev the scheduled opponent. Murray begins this outdoor clay court tournament ranked 52nd but is down to 61st in the live rankings. That's because he's defending the points earned when reaching the last 16 here in 2022. He's had success in this tournament in the past, making it to the final seven years ago. This season has been inconsistent so far for Murray and his hopes of being seeded for future Grand Slams aren't that high. This is only his second clay court tournament of the year. The other was in Monte Carlo where he only won four games against Alex de Minaur who was ranked 19th at the time.

Andrea Vavassori is the world 164 (a career high) and had to win two qualifiers to make it to the main draw. It wasn't an easy time for the Italian who had to to go to three sets to defeat Otto Virtanen and then defeated Brazilian Felipe Meligini Alves. He won in straight sets but had to go to 14-12 in the second set tie-break. Those wins have seen Vavassori rise to 147th in the live rankings, his first time in the top 150. The Italian has spent most of the year playing on the Challenger Tour. He's had some success on clay with a semi-final in Chile and a last eights in Italy and Portugal. Clay is his best surface and he showed that when reaching the quarter finals of the Marrakech ATP event with wins over two top 100 players. He'll certainly give Murray a match but the British player can put his experience to good use and get the win here.
