Fifth seed Jasmine Paolini will begin her Cincinnati Open campaign against the unseeded Anastasia Potapova in the second round. Ahead of the Thursday match, read on for the preview and our prediction.

Anastasia Potapova booked her slot here courtesy of a three-set victory over Clara Burel. By the time she played in the first round here, she had lost five straight matches. With that put to a halt, she will be eager for another win to regain her confidence.

The Russian defeated Paolini earlier in the year at Indian Wells and there she will draw motivation for this fixture. The 23-year-old is ranked 44th in the WTA. Potapova has never won more than one match in her previous two appearances in Cincinnati.

Jasmine Paolini is having an incredible season and has been one of the form players this year. She has compiled a 32-14 record which has so far culminated in three finals.

The Italian won in Dubai then finished as runner-up at the French Open and Wimbledon. All three feats this year have been career highs. This strong run in 2024 has made her a mainstay in the WTA top 10 and is currently ranked fifth.

Paolini, who has claimed 12 wins on hard courts so far, made it to the quarter-finals in Cincinnati last year. That remains her best stretch in this event. The 28-year-old is coming off a third-round exit at the Paris Olympics. The winner of this match will square off with Karolina Pliskova, Emma Navarro or Mirra Andreeva next.
