Seventh-seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will play Amanda Anisimova in the second round of the WTA Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, D.C., in what should be a very close match. Which of the two female right-handers will our prediction favour?

Over the last year Pavlyuchenkova has won 64% of her games on hard courts, which is comfortably her best record on any surface. She defeated Ashlyn Krueger in three sets to reach the second round here. If she beats Anisimova, it will be the 500th win of her career.

The current 33rd-ranked player in the world isn’t in good form, winning just four of her last ten matches. However, all those games were played on clay or grass. She has had much more success on hard courts, reaching the semi-finals in Linz and Doha earlier this year.

Her 21-year-old American opponent Anisimova has been injured or resting for a large part of the past year and has seen her ranking plummet as a result. However, fresh from a muscular injury that kept her out from mid-January to April, Anisimova is building up her fitness and match sharpness.

Anisimova has only played 17 games in the past year, winning nine and losing eight. However, she belied her status as a qualifier for this event by beating Sloane Stephens in straight sets in the first round in Washington. 

Although she has won just five of her last ten matches, Anisimova has won both the previous matches against her opponent in straight sets, including a win back in January 2024 at the ASB Classic in Auckland. 

Whoever progresses from this match will face either America’s Caroline Dolehide or second-seed Daria Kasatkina in the quarter-finals.
