A Pacific division clash in the NHL on Friday evening sees the Anaheim Ducks playing host to the red-hot Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks are sitting second to bottom in the division with a record of 18 wins, 30 losses and two overtime defeats on the year, giving them a total of 38 points. They’ll be taking on an Edmonton Oilers team that has moved up to third in the standings with 29 wins, 16 defeats and only one overtime defeat for a points total of 59.
Despite the tough year overall, Anaheim were actually playing quite well in the buildup to the All-Star break, winning their last two appearances and three of their last four overall. The team’s last time taking to the ice resulted in a 3-2 overtime victory against the Sharks. However, this will be the Ducks first time back in action since the break, meaning they haven’t played in nine days. The Ducks will also have to contend with the fact that they have put up extremely below par results at the Honda Center this season with their 8-17-1 mark the single worst in the NHL. The offensive production hasn’t been there for Anaheim this season as they rank fourth-worst in the NHL in scoring with an average of 2.56 goals scored per game.
Standing in their way is the league’s hottest team in the Edmonton Oilers. The visitors were within a single game of tying the NHL’s all-time record for consecutive wins at 17. Instead, they were thwarted by a 3-1 away defeat to the Golden Knights, putting an end to their incredible run at 16 games won in a row. Regardless, it was a fantastic stretch for Edmonton who have gotten themselves right back in the playoff picture after an uncharacteristically slow start. They now have the opportunity to bounce back against one of the league’s weaker teams as they look to start a new streak.
