Alycia Parks is having a difficult campaign and has lost more matches than she has won. The American has compiled a 17-21 record and has lost her last two fixtures. Anastasia Potapova has also lost her last two matches. The Russian has fared worse than Parks in recent weeks; she only has one win in her last six fixtures. Potapova was also defeated in the first round at the US Open in her last match. The 22-year-old will hope to get back to the form that saw her win the Linz Open earlier in the year. She has compiled a 28-18 record and has won nine of the 20 matches she played on hard court. Potapova, making her debut in San Diego, is currently ranked 27th in the live ranking. The winner of this first encounter between the two will set up a second-round showdown with top seed Ons Jabeur.
