Ninth seeded Alize Cornet takes on wild card Tatjana Maria in round two of the Bad Hamburg Open. Cornet began this week ranked 42nd in the world and that's 19 places higher than at the beginning of the year. She did though drop ten places in the list released this Monday. The French player owes most of that rise in her ranking to her run to the quarter finals in the Australian Open. Since then, it's been rather disappointing with only one last 16 appearance and that was on clay in Charleston. Cornet has only reached the fourth round at Wimbledon once and that was eight years ago and she's never got to the final of a grass court event. This week began with her beating Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets for the loss of six games.

Tatjana Maria is 106th in the ranking list released on June 20. The German player received a wild card into this tournament and made the most of it in round one beating Anastasia Potapova in three sets. The 34-year-old won an ITF tournament held in Bogata in February but didn't beat anyone ranked higher than 122 that week. A semi-final in Grenoble was reached in her next tournament, again at ITF level. Her return to the WTA tour didn't go well with losses in qualifying rounds in three tournaments. April saw her win a WTA 250 tournament on clay. Her grass court season began with a loss to Katie Boulter in Nottingham and then a quarter final in a WTA 125 event held in Italy. This looks tougher and the bet is on Cornet to get the win.
