After all the excitement of the grass court tournament at Wimbledon, we're back on clay this week. Fifth seeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich faces qualifer Bernarda Pera for a place in the quarter finals of the Budapest Grand Prix. Sasnovich couldn't play at Wimbledon due to being from Belarus. The world number 36 will reach her first quarter final of the year on clay if winning this match. Sasnovich has played in one final this year, that was in Melbourne six months ago. The highlights of her 2022 clay court season has been getting to the last 16 at Roland Garros, with wins over Emma Raducanu and Angelique Kerber before being beaten by Martina Trevisan. The first round of this tournament was a bit of a struggle for her. Sasnovich won the first set against qualifier Fanny Stollar but then lost the second set without winning a game. She fought back well to win the final set 6-3.

Bernarda Pera began this week ranked 130th in the world and had to qualify to get into the main draw. Pera was the top seed in the qualifying rounds and had few problems getting to the main draw. Two matches were won with just five games lost. The first round saw her up against lucky loser Marina Bassols Ribera who had been beaten in the final qualifying round by Fanny Stollar. Pera beat Stollar in straight sets and that's taken her up to 125th in the live rankings. The American got to the final of a WTA 125 clay court tournament in May but has been struggling of late. Her last five matches had been lost before arriving in Budapest. There's been one previous match between these two players with Sasnovich winning for the loss of only four games in Linz in 2020. That was played on a hard court but Sasnovich can get the win here on clay.
