World number 20 Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on 88th-ranked Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opening round of the WTA Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. The winner of this match will move on to face either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Jana Fett in round two. Haddad Maia has struggled since returning to the hard court, following a round of 16 run at Wimbledon. She has gotten past the second round only once in her last five competitions. That includes a first-round exit in Beijing last week when she was beaten by Jasmine Paolini in three sets. The Brazilian is now 30-20 for the year and 15-12 on the hard surface. She has beaten this opponent once in the past though that was over a decade ago when they were still amateurs. Still, with the better overall ranking, the Brazilian is the favourite here. 

Meanwhile, Aliaksandra Sasnovich has endured a difficult season so far. She began the year ranked inside the top 30 and has fallen over 50 places since then. The Bulgarian has not got past the second round of any hard court WTA competition this year, with her only performance of note coming on the grass in the Netherlands. She also failed to win her first qualifying match last month in Beijing, beaten by Laura Pigossi in three sets. Sasnovich is now 22-24 for the year and 14-15 on the hard surface. Only her grass record this year stands in positive territory, though only marginally at 5-4.
