Alexei Popyrin, the 25th seed at the Australian Open, will battle unseeded Corentin Moutet in the first round. A second-round showdown with either Rinky Hijikata or Mitchell Krueger will then await the winner. Below is our prediction for this match.

Alexei Popyrin lost his season opener in Brisbane and will be keen to avoid a second successive loss. The Australian hasn’t had the best of times when competing in Melbourne and has suffered four first-round exits in his last five appearances.

Popyrin, who ranks 24th in the ATP, had his best tour campaign last season. He won 30 matches and claimed the Canadian Open for his first Masters 1000 success.

Popyrin earned his win over Moutet on clay last April.

Corentin Moutet has returned to Melbourne after missing last year’s edition. The Frenchman has won his opening-round tie here in his last three appearances and he will be keen to continue this record.

Moutet, who is making his season debut, had won three straight against Popyrin before they squared off on clay in Monte-Carlo last season. Two of his victories in this fixture have been on hardcourts.

The one-time tour finalist will start his run in Melbourne having dropped to 70th in the live ranking.
