Daniel Evans has been playing Grand Slam events for 12 years but has only ever reached the fourth round once. He can double that tally if the 24th seed can defeat unseeded Alexei Popyrin. His one fourth round Grand Slam appearance was at the Australian Open in 2017. This year has seen him lose twice in the first round and then reach the third round at Wimbleon. Evans began this tournament ranked 27th, five places higher than at the start of 2021. Highlights of a successful year have been winning a tournament in Melbourne in January and reaching the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he beat Novak Djokovic. Recent form hasn't been so good but this week he's had wins over Thiago Monteiro and Marcos Giron, both in four sets. He's had one previous match against Popyrin, a straight sets win at the cinch Championship in June of this year.

Alexei Popyrin began this week ranked 73rd in the world which is 40 places higher than at the start of this year. However, he was as high as 61st in May after a good start to the year that saw him win a tournament in Singapore. He hasn't been able to build on that and not reached the last eight of a tournament in 17 attempts. This week has seen Popyrin beat Radu Albot and then 15th seed Grigor Dimitorv. He won two tie-breaks before his opponent retired when 4-0 down in the third. Evans beat him earlier this year and can get a win here. Have a side-bet on a tie-break.
