Alexander Zverev - Nicolás Jarry: Form Analysis
Third seed Alexander Zverev attempts to win his second Italian Open title. He faces the 21st seed Nicolas Jarry who is in his first Masters final. Zverev won this outdoor clay court tournament in 2017 and was the losing finalist in 2018. His excellent form in this tournament has continued with a semi-final two years ago and now his third final in Rome. The German is the world number five but winning this title will move him up to fourth. He’ll remain in third place in the Live ATP Race. Zverev is yet to win a singles title this year but will be hoping to change that on Sunday. He has only dropped one set on his way to this final. That was in Friday’s semi-final where he had to come from a set down to get past Alejandro Tabilo. He leads Jarry 4-2 in previous meetings and they are 2-2 on clay.
Nicolas Jarry is in his second ATP Tour final of the year. The Chilean played on the South American clay court swing and reached the title decider in Buenos Aires. That followed a good run of success on clay last year with two titles won. His South American form wasn’t initially transferred to Europe. The first three tournaments he played in Europe this year failed to see him win a match. It’s all gone much better for him in Rome where he had previously failed to get past the first round. He didn’t have the toughest of draws in the early stages of this tournament. It got harder in the last eight when he knocked out sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets after losing the first. In Friday’s semi-final he beat the 14th seed Tommy Paul, losing the middle one on a tie-break. Jarry is now up to 17th in the live rankings and will go up to 15th if beating Zverev. In the Live ATP Race, he’s also 17th but becoming the Italian Open champion will see him rise to 12th. We don’t think that will happen though and tip Zverev to lift the trophy.
