Fourth seed Alexander Zverev will on Friday take on the unseeded Luca Van Assche at the Hamburg European Open. The winner of this quarterfinal tie will book a semifinal meeting with either Casper Ruud or unseeded Arthur Fils. Alexander Zverev has been in fine form in this tournament, winning his two rounds without dropping a set. This form should have him confident of going past the semifinals for the first time. The German has however been shaky this season, largely due to his struggles with fitness following an injury-hit 2022 campaign. He has a 29-17 record with most of his victories, 17, coming on clay. His highlight of the season came at the French Open where he reached the semifinals for the third consecutive year. Zverev is currently ranked 19th in the ATP and can move up two places if he wins on Friday.

Luca Van Assche is making his debut in Hamburg and so far all is good for the Frenchman. He defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets in the last round. The match lasted well over three hours and saw him come from a set down to win. Van Assche has had his best moments of this season on clay. Fifteen of his 26 victories have come on the surface and so too has one of his two challenger titles. The 19-year-old has recorded many firsts this season. He made his Grand Slam debut this year as well as record his first tour win which was in Estoril on clay. He also defeated Stan Wawrinka in Banja Luka for his first top-100 win. His form has seen him record new career-high world rankings almost every week. He is currently ranked 62nd in the live ranking.
