The Semi-final of the ATP Chengdu Open sees top-seeded Alexander Zverev facing off against third-seed Grigor Dimitrov. A matchup against either Roman Safiulin or Lorenzo Musetti in the final awaits the winner of this encounter. Zverev is out to claim his second tournament win of 2023 and is the current bookmakers favorite to do just that. The talented German was crowned champion of the Hamburg Open in July and has put together some solid runs since then. The current world number 10 in the ATP rankings made the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open in August and the quarter-final of the US Open earlier this month. He would ultimately be eliminated by Djokovic and Alcaraz in those two events, the current world number one and two ranked players. In this event, Zverev needed three sets to get by both of his opponents. He beat 106th-ranked Pavel Kotov in the second round and 47th-ranked Kecmanovic in the quarter-final to advance to this stage.

Grigor Dimitrov will have to pull off a fairly sizable upset if he is to advance to what would be only his second finals appearance of 2023. Dimitrov previously finished as the runner-up in the Geneva Open back in May and has been on a decent run since then. The Bulgarian made the fourth-round of Wimbledon and the semi-final of the Citi Open in Washington. Results wise, Dimitrov has been performing well this year and has racked up 32 wins in his 49 total matches (65%). The 32-year-old has looked in fine form in this tournament, easily disposing of Varillas in the second round and O’Connell in the quarter-final. Dimitrov won both of these matches in straight sets, finishing with a +5 games differential in his first outing and a +7 games differential in the second. The 20th-ranked player has now won seven of his last 10 matches played on hard courts ahead of this big semi-final showdown.
