The ATP Beijing Open gets started with the main draw as eighth-seeded Alexander Zverev takes on unseeded Diego Schwartzman in the round of 32. The winner of this encounter will advance to the round of 16 to face either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Yi Zhou. Zverev is fresh off of winning the Chengdu Open just two days ago after defeating Roman Safiullin by two sets to one. The victory gives “Sascha” a solid 225 point lead over eighth-place Holger Rune in the Nitto ATP Finals qualification standings. As things currently stand, Zverev would claim the last automatic qualifying spot for the tournament in seventh-place. The win also means that Zverev comes into this tournament on a red-hot run of form. The German has now won 18 of his last 21 matches with two competition wins in the last two months. Zverev has pushed his record to 46 wins and 21 losses (68.7%)in 2023.

Diego Schwartzman has been in a brutal slump for the last 12 months and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. The former ATP top-10 ranked player finished 2022 on a seven match losing streak which carried over into the beginning of 2023. He’s now lost his last three matches in a row after having to retire early in a 6-3, 4-2 loss to 285th-ranked Alex Bolt in his last outing. On the year, Schwartzman has won only 12 of his 36 total appearances. His best run came at Roland Garros where he won his first two matches to ultimately go out in the third round. It was only three years ago that Schwartzman achieved his career-high ranking of eighth. Now, the Argentinian has dropped all the way down to 133rd in the standings as he continues to search for answers.
