Ninth seed Alexander Zverev and the unseeded Denis Shapovalov will rekindle their rivalry on Wednesday at the Halle Open. The two will battle in the second round and the winner will next play either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Nicolas Jarry. Alexander Zverev is slowly regaining his form after a turbulent first half of the season. The German is now up to 22nd in the live ranking. He comes to this match having won 21 of the 35 matches he has played. His last match saw him defeat wildcard Dominic Thiem in straight sets. Zverev and Shapovalov have played each other seven times to date but this will be their first encounter on grass. The two have gone back and forth with one another and as it stands, Zverev has the edge having won four times. Zverev is a two-time finalist at Westfalen.

Denis Shapovalov won when these last met, which was in the fourth round in Melbourne. He will hope for similar success as he targets a spark to help him turn around his season. The Canadian has lost more matches than he has won. He defeated Lloyd Harris in straight sets in the first round to earn his 10th win of the campaign. This has moved him up one place to 26th in the live ranking. Another win on Wednesday can bounce him up two more places. Shapovalov has struggled over the course of his career on grass and so far has managed an 18-19 record on the surface. He has played two matches on grass in 2023 with the first seeing him eliminated early in Stuttgart.
