Top seed Alexander Zverev faces unseeded Christian Garin in the BMW Open quarter-finals. The winner of this match will take on either third-seeded Taylor Fritz or the sixth seed Jack Draper for a place in the final. Zverev has won this outdoor clay court tournament on two occasions. The German was the winner in both 2017 and 2018 and he's on course for a third success here. He's ranked fourth in the world but will stay in that position even if winning the title on Sunday. In the Live ATP Race, he's in third place with only Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev ahead of him, neither of whom can be overtaken this week. This is his second clay court event of the year. Last week saw him lose in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. This week has seen him beat Jurij Rodionov in straight sets.

There have been two previous matches between these two players. They are level at 1-1 with both played on clay. Their most recent match was last year with Zverev winning in straight sets. The other was in this tournament in 2019 when Garin won on his way to lifting the trophy. He's 106th in the latest ranking list but up to 101st in the live rankings. His career high is 17th and that was achieved three years ago but his form has slipped since then. Garin had a disappointing time on clay in South America earlier this year with one win in five matches. Better form has been shown more recently with a Challenger Tour quarter-final and getting to the last four in Estoril.
