Alexander Shevchenko defeated Huesler earlier this year in the challenger circuit and will seek to add to his advantage in this fixture. He won in straight sets on his way to making the final in Phoenix. This was the second of his three finals so far and the only one he has lost. Despite his title successes, the Russian has struggled with a lack of consistency in 2023. He has compiled a 31-25 record with the majority of his wins, 16, coming on hard court where one of his two titles has been won. The 22-year-old arrives for this competition after making his main draw debut in Cincinnati. He rose from the qualifiers but was eliminated in the first round. Shevchenko is currently ranked 84th in the live ranking.

Marc-Andre Huesler is ranked three places below Shevchenko in the live ranking at number 87. He too has struggled with inconsistency but has fared much worse than his soon-to-be opponent. The Swiss has lost 10 more matches than he has won. He has compiled a 13-23 record and arrives for this match with only one win from his last seven outings. Huesler also took part in Cincinnati but was eliminated in the final round of qualifying. Before his first-round win in the competition, he had lost five matches on the trot. Though he is on a losing record on hard court, Huesler has won more matches on the surface than on any other. Coupling this with his semifinal finish here last season, he will be confident of prolonging his stay past this round at least.
