Third seed Carlos Alcaraz makes his first appearance of the season at the Australian Open where he will face off with Alexander Shevchenko. The winner of this first-round tie will then play Mohamed Dougaz or Yoshihito Nishioka for a place in the third round. Below is our prediction for this match.

Alexander Shevchenko has lost eight times in his 11 career meetings with an ATP top 10 ranked player. One of those losses was against Alcaraz in Madrid last season.

The Kazakh managed just three games in that battle and is likely in for another hammering given his shaky start to the year. Shevchenko, who is down to 77th in the live ranking, has so far compiled a 2-2 record.

The 24-year-old made his Melbourne debut last season and lost his opening tie.

This is the only major that Carlos Alcaraz has been unable to conquer in his trophy-laden career. The young Spaniard has won four Grand Slam titles but has only managed to reach the quarter-finals in Melbourne.

As he makes his season debut, remaining as the last man standing in this event will be high on the 21-year-old’s list.

Alcaraz had an exceptional 2024 campaign. He won 54 matches which was the third successive season he had won over 50 fixtures. In that run he bagged four titles, two being majors.
