World number 48, Alexander Bublik, will take on 75th-ranked Marcos Giron in a first-round match at the ATP Geneva Open on Monday. The winner of this match will go on to face Taylor Fritz, who received a first-round bye, in the round of 16. Giron has delivered a mixed bag of performances this year, illustrated in his record, which reads as 12-12 overall and 4-4 on the clay. The American made a promising start on the clay in Houston and followed up with a quarter-final in Munich. However, he could not build on it, losing in the second round of the Madrid Masters, followed by a first-round exit to qualifier Roman Safiullin in Rome. He may find it hard here in Switzerland, but a win in this one could give him the boost he needs to take his record for the year into positive territory. This is the third meeting between these players, with the head-to-head record currently standing at 1-1. They met once on clay, at the Rome Masters last year, and Giron won the match in three sets.

After reaching the semi-finals in Marseille in February, Bublik has struggled to put a meaningful run of results together. His record for the year is now 11-18 and 5-7 on the clay. The Kazakh was knocked out in the first round of the Miami Masters and saw his poor form carry onto the clay, with back-to-back first-round knockouts in Monte Carlo and Barcelona. Despite losing in disappointing fashion to Harold Mayot at the Aix en Provence Challenger event, Bublik got some much-needed match time under his belt. That showed at the Rome Masters, where he overcame Pedro Martinez and Ben Shelton as the underdog in the opening rounds. Bublik fought valiantly but lost to Casper Ruud in round three after forcing the match to a final set tiebreak. That performance will give him heaps of confidence coming into this one.
