The world number 46, Alexander Bublik, will take on qualifier David Goffin in the first round of the ATP Hertogenbosch Open on Tuesday. The winner of this match will go on to face Jannik Sinner in the next round. This is the third time the two will meet, with Goffin currently leading 2-0. He most recently beat this opponent at the Auckland Open at the start of this year. Goffin was ranked inside the top ten in the world as recently as 2020, but a combination of fitness issues and poor form has led to him falling outside the top 100, currently 123rd. He was forced to go through qualifiers for this tournament, and after beating Alec Deckers in the opening match, the Belgian was pushed right to the end by Jesper De Jong, but he managed to hold on after a third-set tiebreak. Goffin is now 17-12 for the year and 2-0 on the grass. The Belgian has won just five main draw matches this year and was beaten in his opening match at Roland Garros at the start of the month. Bublik has also seen his world ranking dip in recent times, from 30th in the world at the start of the year to his current 46th. The Kazakh is on a three-match losing streak after his loss in Rome and first-round exits in Geneva and at Roland Garros. At the Grand Slam event, he was beaten in disappointing fashion by qualifier Giulio Zeppieri in five sets. However, the clay has never been Bublik’s favourite surface, and he will not be too phased by his recent disappointments as he steps onto the grass for the first time this year. However, he will need to address his poor record, which currently reads as an unimpressive 11-20. He will need to settle quickly here, or he could be making another early exit which will see his ranking sent tumbling once again.
