16th seed Alexander Bublik has a tough match in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters. He takes on unseeded Borna Coric in this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 tournament. For the winner of this match there's a second round clash with either Jan-Lennard Struff or in-form Sebastian Baez. Bublik is 18th in the live rankings but comes into this match having lost his last two in a row and three of his last four. All three of those losses were on hard courts and he didn't win a set in any of them. This year has seen him win an indoor hard court tournament in Montpellier and he beat Coric in the title decider. Bublik also got to the final in Dubai and before that, he again beat Coric in Rotterdam. That takes their head-to-head record to 3-0 in favor of Bublik but this is their first meeting on clay. Bublik isn't so good on clay though and has never made it past round two at Roland Garros or in Monte Carlo. His only singles title on this surface came on the Futures circuit eight years ago,

Borna Coric will be more confident therefore of finally beating Bublik. He's 33rd in the live rankings so in with a good chance of being seeded at Roland Garros this year. Coric needs to greatly improve his form though after losing four of his last five matches. He has reached two finals though as he'd got to the title decider of a Challenger Tour event before that loss to Bublik in Montpellier. On clay, the Croatian has reached the third round at Roland Garros on five occasions. 2019 saw him get to the last eight in Monte Carlo and he was a semifinalist in Madrid in 2023. His one clay court ATP title win was seven years ago in Marrakech. His record on clay is better than that of his opponents and we tip him to win this match.
