Third seed Alex Michelsen will face unseeded Tennys Sandgren in the last four of the hard court Challenger Tour event in Knoxville. Potential opponents in the final are unseeded Denis Kudla and either fourth seeded Zachary Svajda or fifth seed Emilio Nava who were still playing their quarter final at the time of writing this article. Michelsen is now ranked 111th in the live rankings (up three but one below his career high), and a victory in this match would see him rise as high as 104th.. The 19-year-old has had an impressive year both on the Challenger Tour and the main ATP Tour. He's won two lower level tournaments this year, the most recent being in July. On the ATP Tour he made it to the second round of the US Open and the final of the grass court Hall of Fame tournament. He lost to a player ranked 432nd at the time. This week has gone much better though he had to go to three sets in both of his first two matches. 

Unseeded Tennys Sandgren was at one time ranked 41st in the rankings but that was back in 2019. The former two time Australian Open quarter finalist began this tournament ranked 267th but is back up to 254th in the live rankings. He's not played in an ATP Tour main draw all year spending virtually all of his time on the Challenger and ITF tours. The 32-year-old is in his third Challenger Tour semi-final of the year but is yet to reach a final. He's reached the last four in Knoxille for the loss of one set. That was in round one when having to come from behind to defeat Ethan Quinn. There's been one previous meeting between the pair in 2022, with Sandgren winning in straight sets.but at that time Michelsen was ranked 768th.
