Karen Khachanov, the 19th seed at the Australian Open, will take on unseeded Alex Michelsen in the third round. The winner here will then play Francisco Cerundolo or Alex de Minaur for a place in the quarter-finals. Below is our prediction for this match.

Alex Michelsen has equaled his result from his debut in Melbourne last season. The American lost in this very round last year and will be keen to not suffer the same fate.

Michelsen, who has won five of seven matches, defeated the wildcard James McCabe in straight sets in the last round. He began his campaign with a four-set triumph over 11th seed and former AO finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Advancing to this round has moved the 20-year-old to 38th in the live ranking, a new career high.

Karen Khachanov is seeking to progress to the fourth round at least for the third successive year. The Russian lost in the fourth round last year after he had made the semis the year before.

To book his ticket to this round, Khachanov battled through four sets to eliminate unseeded Gabriel Diallo. The world number 19 has won two of his three matches this season.

He began the campaign with a second-round defeat in Hong Kong.
